Friday was a big day for me - it saw the launch of my brand spanking new Website!! It's taken me forever to do and listing 136 cards was a task and a half but now it's finished I know it was worth all the effort.

I've only sold on Folksy up until now and to be honest the sales haven't been that great over the last couple of months and I seem to be spending more on listing and re-listing than what I'm selling.

I still have a Folksy shop for the time being but as items de-list it's unlikely they'll be re-listed. The advantage of selling on your own website is they stay listed until sold and there's no listing fee!!

August's Feature Friday - Honey Cottage Handicrafts

It's August already - where has this year gone! Time goes so quick now!!

I'm very happy to introduce my August Blog Feature - Honey Cottage Handicrafts. Lorna very kindly gave me lots of lovely information regarding their venture, I hope you enjoy reading!

Describe what you do,when you started doing it and what made you decide that was what you were going to do.

There are 3 of us involved at Honey Cottage Handicrafts – 3 generations. Hilary and Bernice have always been making crafts, since a very young age. Together they have been crafting for over 100 years combined. I (Lorna) don’t really do much making, but I do look after the website and all the content on there. Before we launched the website, we did occasionally and unofficially sell our crafts to friends and families and managed to raise money for charity Smile Train. This year we launched the site to raise awareness and sell some items to try achieve our goal of raising £1000 by the end of 2012 for Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team. We’ve also in the past done some special commissions work and little projects and all the money from this also went to charity.

What makes you different from other people selling/ doing the same craft?

We’re very different to everyone else, and in actuality we don’t really do the same as any other businesses I’ve heard of. One of the main things we do is tatting, which is rarely done anymore and the ethos behind Honey Cottage Handicrafts is also very different to anyone else. We’ve got so much experience in arts and crafts over the years – but we see it as more than that. It’s not just crafts, it’s lifestyle. We believe in making the most with what you’ve got, we recycle, we re-use and we try not to waste anything.

Where do you get your inspiration/ ideas from?

We get our inspiration from all kinds of places, but mainly from our ancestors. A lot of the things we make and methods we use is something we’ve always done. Tradition is very important to us, and I think we’ve found a way to combine age old methods of tatting, sewing, needlework – but with a modern twist.

Is this run as your business full time or just as a sideline?

Currently, this is just a sideline for us. 1 of us is retired, 1 works part time, and another full time. Yes it is something we’d be interested in perusing but we’ll have to see how things go. At the moment I’d say we don’t fully class ourselves as a business, as the money we are raising currently goes to charity.

Where do you make your items, do you have a craft room/ studio?

Where do you sell and how do you market yourselves?

Mainly we sell to friends/colleagues. Now we’re starting online on Folksy and just trying out other options. It’s very much try and see with our marketing strategy at the moment but we hope to attend some festivals over the summer to spread the word and possibly some Christmas fairs later in the year. Word of mouth is a great marketing tool.

Where do you see yourselves in 5 years time?

In 5 years time, hopefully we’ll be making a success of Honey Cottage Handicrafts. But before that we want to reach our goals for charity. Anything over and above that would be a bonus but charity is our main aim for now.

Do you have any advice for people out there who might want to start a craft hobby/business?

Do what you enjoy, and enjoy what you do!

I then asked this month's random question - if you had 3 wishes what would they be and why??

1.       Make a success of our site so we can eventually inspire and educate others on what we do and our tradition. We’d love to be able to pass this on so we don’t see our skills go to waste

2.       To raise as much money for charity by selling our crafts

Great day selling at Uppermill Craft Market

I had a great day selling at the craft market in Uppermill yesterday. As well as lots of sales I also met lots of lovely people including one of the organisers of the event Maria Hourigan. Maria sells the most gorgeous patchwork creations and you can buy her items here. I also met Claire Ogden who specialises in handmade jewellery, tiaras and bridal pieces. Claire sells her creations on Folksy.

If you are local to Saddleworth and love handmade then this market is definately worth a look. The next market will take place on September the 9th in the Museum and Art Gallery in Uppermill.

July's Feature Friday - Maybe Daisy

I'm so glad to see the back of June - the weather's been rubbish and work.... well that's another story but all fine now!

As it's the 1st of July I thought it would be a good time to do July's Feature and this month I've chosen to highlight Emma from Maybe Daisy.

Describe what you do,when you started doing it and what made you decide that was what you were going to do.

I make jewellery, mainly from old, broken, unloved pieces. You know, the kind of thing you find in the bottom of your jewellery box or down the sofa next to the crumbs, the 1p coins and the empty crisp packet that's a flavour nobody in the house actually eats... I take them to bits and mix them with other bits and pieces before lovingly re-making them into something you'd actually like to wear....I hope!

What makes you different from other people selling/ doing the same craft?

My pieces are unique, you're not going to see someone else wearing the same thing! Unless of course that's what you want, I did make four necklaces the same for a customer recently.

Where do you get your inspiration/ ideas from?

I find it helps if you have a glass of wine in hand! I've only been jewellery-making seriously for six months and I can honestly say I've never yet sat down at my desk and not been inspired by the bits and bobs overflowing from it. If I can't see something interesting on my desk, I try the floor, where I re-discover all those bouncy beads that I've dropped recently.

Do you do this as your business full time or is it just a sideline. If you dont do this as a job would you like to?

I work full-time as an online journalist for the Beeb, but would Love (yes, with a capital 'L') to do this full-time. It's tricky trying to balance work, two teenagers, husband, dog and cat with playing with beads. I won't lie to you, sometimes one of us runs out of clean pants.... or food!

Where do you make your items, do you have a craft room/ studio?

I share an office at home with my husband. He's on one side, I'm on the other and the dog usually lies in the middle looking confused. I'm a very organised person, but my side of the room is a tip. Hubby's side of the room is a tip. He often accuses me of messing it up, but that's not true, he's quite capable of messing it up himself. If we're both in the room at the same time, you can hear him sighing as bits of metal ping off the blinds in the bay window where I sit trimming them. He also looks disapprovingly at some of my pliers... that used to be his....that I stole from the garage! Occasionally a teenager stumbles in looking for food or clean pants!!

Where do you sell and how do you market yourself?
I tried Esty, didn't like it as much as the lovely folk on Folksy. I also use my own Facebook page - facebook.com/maybedaisy - it's my personal one, there's just not enough hours in the day to have a fan one too! But feel free to offer your friendship!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?

In a huge barn conversion, in my own craft room, husband playing with computers across the hall, house full of teenagers, wine in the fridge, dogs playing in our acreage. And all that's stopping me is a massive win on the lottery. (note to self - buy lottery ticket)

Do you have any advice for people out there who might want to start a craft hobby/business?

Go for it! What have you got to lose? If you like the stuff you make, chances are someone else will too, so share the love. Keep up to date with your books though! And buy extra pants because you'll get behind with the washing.

The architect George Clarke, because he is amazingly talented and lovely. My daughter is into interior design and he has advised her on a college project, and when I asked him to autograph a book for her as a surprise he was happy to oblige. Plus I want him to redesign the barn conversion I can't yet afford. And I did once see the outline of his bottom against a shower curtain on one of his programmes. It looked peachy.

Katherine Middleton (as was) because she just seems lovely and it would be interesting to see life from her side of the balcony.

Calling All Card Makers!!!

Now I'm a sucker for a good cause so this was right up my street!!

Operation Blue Witch Squadron was set up here in the UK by Cazz Wright, a fellow crafter She'd heard about schemes around the country that were sending handmade cards to the guys and gals serving overseas to enable them to send cards back home to their family & friends. As Cazz has a family connection with the RAF she chose to set up and co-ordinate a similar scheme for RAF Personnel serving abroad.

If you are a card -maker and have a few spare cards knocking around that you can't sell why not send them over to be used by RAF Personnel via Operation Blue Witch Squadron. Cards are accepted from anyone and everyone and if they are not handmade but shop-bought then that's okay too. All they ask is that there is NO LOOSE GLITTER on the cards for safety reasons. Cards must be packaged individually with an envelope inside a cellophane bag. Cards can be any size up to A5 and apart from specific occasion cards, they are looking for general birthday cards, anniversary cards, blank cards & baby cards. Please remember that there are both men & women serving abroad so cards are requested for both.

June's Feature Friday - My Crafty Candles

What a week it's been!! I'm very very busy in the day job at the moment and finding it difficult to get the features prepared every week so I've decided that for the next few months I'm just going to do one a month.

For June I've chosen the very wonderful, and humourous Martina Gomez from My Crafty Candles. I've recently been conversing with Martina via Twitter and I have to say she cracks me up!! She's definately worth a follow if you are a Tweeter!!

Describe what you do,when you started doing it and what made you decide that was what you were going to do.

I make personalised candles to order, the website has been live since Aug 2008 when I started out this new venture whilst on maternity leave with baby number 4. Over the years I have added new lines to the site but have found my speciaility seems to be weddings, memorials and christenings - goes in hand with keepsakes and remembering.

What makes you different from other people selling/ doing the same craft?

Well I am not the only person to make personalised candles, what I am always doing is changing my designs and themes and making them really unique to me! My most recent images that customers may use for their candles were shot on location in Bali! (I wasn't the lucky one holidaying!!) I am not a follower but a creator and take pride in designing my own ranges from start to finish. I like knowing that my work and ideas are mine and that makes the piece purchased for the customer quite unique. I also get frequently asked to make bespoke orders too, these are fun as it's nice to make something as a one off for someone.

Where do you get your inspiration/ ideas from?

It usually occurs at the most random time! Not all of my ideas are good ones! Take the made moment of the ribbon printer.......sometimes I get caught up, I mull things over in my head and other times I need to order things and make straight away.

Do you do this as your business full time or is it just a sideline.

The website came from some strange need to try something out! I didn't really know what I expected from it as it really was a bit of a giggle! It isnt my 'real' job, well the one that pays the bills anyway, but it has now grown bigger than a hobby and it's keeping up that's hard. I have managed to reduce my real job hrs by a few each month which is great as I am home with my family. Anyone that has a website will know and understand how time consuming it is updating, emails, photo shoots - not to mention Facebook and now the Tweeting..it takes over!!

Where do you make your items, do you have a craft room/ studio?

Not lucky enough to have a studio but the other half has said he is going to build me a studio at the end of the garden..........or is he trying to get rid of me and my candles?! These are all made from my home, very tricky with 4 kids. The stock alone is stored everywhere!

Where do you sell and how do you market yourself?

My main outlet is the website www.mycraftycandles.co.uk, then I use facebook http://www.facebook.com/pages/mycraftycandles/177423260395 which for me has been a great platform and generates a lot of sales. I am new to Twitter https://twitter.com/#!/mycraftycandles and will get a famous follower if it is the last thing I do! I dabbled with Misi but to be honest I don't have the time to keep up with lots of sites. I have run a few big magazine ads for high end wedding magazines, these do generate some work but the best way for me is internet lead, more search specific leads and then of course my loyal and faithful customers that come back to me! I have been approached by other websites to sell my products but I tend not to go there!!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?

Under a pile of wax if I do not get a workshop soon! But seriously I have no idea as I really didn't expect the site to do well. What I mean by that is that I never really thought about it, this may sound strange I know. I do at times wonder why I am doing this at all when I am in my kitchen at 1am wrapping parcels to post - it takes over!! But I just love seeing my inbox beep with 'Website Order Notification' I think to myself I did that!

Do you have any advice for people out there who might want to start a craft hobby/business?

Go for it and don't expect it to just happen, the internet is HUGE!! It takes a lot of time and dedication and an actual love and passion for your 'baby' and don't underestimate what you can do! I haven't been on any courses in business or web marketing, I taught myself and learnt by doing a bit of homework.

Random question - name 5 things you just can't live without!

I feel very fortunate to have made this mad venture a semi successful one, I have 4 children one who has autism so life in 'our house' is busy, mad, loud and different!! This year my friends nominated me for a Mum's Club Business Award - I was short listed and then a finalist! I was entered into the resiliance category. I was thrilled just with the nomination. I have all the rosettes on my homepage and am proud to show them off!

My One & Only Event - Saddleworth Show

I'm in preparations for my one and only craft event of the year. I used to do a lot of craft fairs, but found that most of them barely made me back the stall fee, so I made a decision a couple of years ago to just do the events I knew would be profitable.

Saddleworth Show is a local event which is organised every year by the Rotary Club and pulls in 5000+ visitors. There are lots of things going on, last year they had racing camels!! The first time we did this event the weather was fanastic and it was really busy in the craft tent. Despite sharing the tent with Phoenix Cards I still managed to do well. Last year it rained and we had issues with the tent roof leaking - we still sold well and hoping for another successful event this year.

The show takes place on the 12 June from 10am until 5pm at Churchill Playing Fields, Greenfield, Oldham. OL3 7AQ. Admission prices are £4.00 Adults, £3.00 Concessions £2.00 Children, £10.00 Family tickets include 2 adults and up to 3 children.

Friday Feature - One Stop Pamper Shop

Wow another week done and I'm so looking forward to a long weekend. Really hoping for better weather than what we've had lately - hopefully off to Formby on Sunday or Monday for a nice day out.

So this week I've got another lady's talents to share with you - let me introduce Maryann Morris from One Stop Pamper Shop.

Describe what it is you do, when you started doing it and what made you decide on your chosen craft.

I create candles, Really smelly ones! I started off when I was a teenager, but when I was 24 I decided to try and make some money from it. 6 years on and this is how it worked out!

What makes you different from other people selling/ doing the same craft?

I believe 100% in handmade, its not just a means to make money, but a whole way of life. I care about the products I make and therefore do everything I possibly can to make them the best scented candles ever!

Where do you get your inspiration/ ideas from?

Everywhere! Quite literally it drives my partner insane. We could be anywhere or doing anything and an idea will suddenly pop into my head and I'll need to write it down - I'm so forgetful!

Where do you make your items, do you have a studio?

I have a studio in a craft village in Essex

Do you have any advice for people out there who might want to start a craft hobby/business?

There's never going to be a "right time" so if its really what you want to do then just give it a go. At least if it then goes wrong you can say you tried. Build up from small and don't borrow a penny if you can help it, that way every penny you make goes directly back into your pocket.

Feature Friday - Ayntre Soaps

How's your week been then?? Mines been hectic to say the least. My boss in the day job has been on leave so I've been left to hold the fort at work (and had her mobile to answer!) I've also got another issue I'm having to deal with which I may blog about when it looks like things are going in my favour!

So there wasn't a feature last week because I ran out of volunteers but my feature is back this week and I've found another pool of talent I would like you to meet -Lynne and Peter Allen from Ayntre Soaps.

Describe what you do,when you started doing it and what made you decide that was what you were going to do.

My Son Peter and I make handmade, cold process soaps. We were both carers for my Dad and about three years ago we started making soap as a hobby. We took courses in Cold Process Soapmaking and Advanced CP Soapmaking. We used to give our soaps to family and friends but so many people were asking us for them that it became a very expensive hobby! We decided to start up our own soapmaking business last year (cue another course in Labelling - the Eu regs for soap are an absolute nightmare). Because we were working from home it meant that we could take care of Dad and work part-time making soaps. After Dad passed away in January this year the business became our full time occupation.

What makes you different from other people selling/ doing the same craft?

Palm Oil is one of the three main soap making oils, however, there is growing deforestation, particularly in South East Asia, due to the growth of palm plantations. As a result many species, including Orang Utans and the Sumatran tiger are on the verge of extinction. We decided that we were going to develop our own palm oil free recipes and I'm proud to say that all of our soaps are completely free of palm oil.

Where do you get your inspiration/ ideas from?

Mmm a difficult question...Usually I have most of my bright ideas when I'm lying in bed trying to get to sleep - insomnia does have it's uses I guess. We also try to make our soaps look the way they smell, if you know what I mean so, for example, our Mango Soap is mango coloured, and the Dragonsblood Soap was just crying out for a real gold topping.

Where do you make your items, do you have a studio?

I wish we did! We make the soap in our kitchen, the garage contains our curing racks and the dining room is our office.

Where do you sell and how do you market yourself?

We sell on our website www.ayntresoaps.co.uk. We also have a stall every Saturday at Ormskirk market in Lancashire, we do craft fairs when we can and we're hoping to add a couple of retailers that we'll be supplying but I can't say too much about that at the moment. Most of our publicity is via twitter and facebook although, again, watch this space ...

Where do you see yourselves in 5 years time?

We would definitely like to increase the wholesaling side of the business. It's difficult taking on too much retailing ourselves as we also need time to make the soap.

Do you have any advice for people out there who might want to start a craft hobby/business?

It's really important to write a business plan. It's an absolute pain to do and everyone hates it but it really helps you focus on what you're going to do and how. Also, when your hobby becomes your business you need to think differently and a business plan helps with this.

Father's Day - 19th June

Feature Friday - Charlee's Aunt

It's Friday again already and I hope you've all enjoyed another short week!! We are off to Cornwall for a long weekend as some friends of ours have just moved down there. Hoping for nice weather so we can do lots of walks and go to the beach.

As it's Friday it's time to feature another very talented crafter and this week I would like to introduce Sharon from Charlee's Aunt.

Describe what you do,when you started doing it and what made you decide that was what you were going to do

I currently make pictures of simple shapes/outlines using a multitude of vintage and new buttons, beads and oddments. I only started it last Novemember after seeing a huge picture made out of buttons that I couldn't get out of my head. I love the tactile nature of the buttons and the depth they can give to something relatively simple. Colour is very important too in the work, and that drives me to try different things. I also work on pieces by using crochet and knitting.

What makes you different from other people selling/ doing the same craft?

I've not seen many people take the idea as far as I do, so its quite easy to say how I can be different from the crowd with my work. I use a lot of different buttons, including those with writing on them to make special individual gifts for people, or to brighten your home. I also deorate the inner edge of the mount with a selection of words that can be about the person specifically or the theme of the item. They can be made exceptionally personal in this way.

Where do you get your inspiration/ ideas from?

Colour is one of the factors that drives me, I like to try different things together. I also take inspiration from nature and the customers I have. Some work is in a gallery and the owner suggests ideas that she thinks may work in this medium too.

Do you do this as your business full time or is it just a sideline. If you don't do this as a job would you like to?

Its a sideline as I'm a part time teacher. I'd love to be more involved in crafts, and have just started a knitting group at the school I'm at with the pupils, which is being quite successful.

Where do you make your items, do you have a craft room/ studio?

I've a fantastic study that is decorated in white, and one wall in Dandelion Clocks wall paper by Sanderson in Blackcurrent, so the room is full of light and colour as it is west facing. I sit looking out of the window which helps my inspiration.

Where do you sell and how do you market yourself?

I am on Folksy, and I also have a few pieces in a local gallery The Box of Delights which happened on the off chance. I am not marketing myself too well, but its enough for me at the moment due to time constraints/work. I also have a Blog and post fairly regularly about the things I am working on but not aren't yet up for sale. I am enjoying being able to talk about what I enjoy doing. Someone on Folksy mentioned a site called Stumble Upon which allows you to 'like' pages which make them more likely to be seen by others, so I use that too.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?

More involved with crafting groups and creative teaching hopefully and a successful small sideline in my own work. I also knit, crochet and cross stitch so would like to have time to do more than I do now. British Wool is something I'm becoming very interested in.

Do you have any advice for people out there who might want to start a craft hobby/business?

Do it. Make what makes you smile and ask for advice from other creative people, your friends and family and from the great forums on sites like Folksy. Oh, and be very patient.

Random question - if someone gave you £1million and you had 1 day to spend it what would you do??

I've been thinking about this for a while, I would pay off my own and close friends mortgages, buy lots and lots of vouchers for the shops I like and craft suppliers. Buy a 'space' that I could create into a place where crafters could come together and chat or create in a friendly environment. Also giving chance to display their work and maybe even sell it. Then there are things like hire a gardener (pay in advance) and a workman to do the jobs I need doing on my house. Its a hard one, but I am sure it is easy to use all the money!!!

Anyway as it's Friday I'm happy to introduce this week's Feature - Sarah from Silver Birch Crafts.

I'm Sarah from Silver Birch Crafts. I started the business in November 2009 and after making a few bits for family and friends, I decided to start making gifts to sell. My husband has quite extensive spinal problems and unable to work, I am his full time carer so working from home is the best option.

My gifts are different from others as every item is unique and I put a lot of love and care into every item and with the Yellow Spotty Range developing all the time they are unique in every way!

Running Silver Birch Crafts is my full time job and I am just setting up my own sewing area in my spare room, which I can’t wait to get in. I sell from my website www.silverbirchcrafts.co.uk, but I also do a regular monthly craft market at The Village Hall in Tring the last Saturday of the month. I aim to have a regular client/customer base and perhaps an employee and a shop.

My advise for anyone considering setting up their own craft business is to research, and don’t expect to be successful straight away, it takes a lot of hard work and many hours.

Wedding Card

One of my work colleagues get's married on the 7th May and as I can't attend I thought it would be a nice idea to provide a card for everyone to sign at work..... eek!! I realised that probably about 50 people are going to see it so it had to be good!!

I recently purchased a Sizzix Big Shot and a wooden die cutter which is what I've used to create it. I'm quite pleased with the end result having never made my own die cuts before.

Feature Friday - Not Just Handbags

Wow Friday's come round quick don't they.... quite scary that we're halfway through April already and all the Bank Holidays are gonna make it seem a short month!

So this week my feature is all about Elissa from Not Just Handbags.

Describe what you do,when you started doing it and what made you decide that was what you were going to do.

I design and create handbags and homeware. I actually started my current business as I had planned to go on to do Graphic Design when I finished my Art & Design course, however, due to cutbacks for adult education I was unable to find a place on a course. The lady interviewing me at one college commented on the handbag I had, which was made from an old tweed jacket. She said that it was very unusual and when I explained my hobby she said that I could probably find a good market for my work. As no-one would give me a place on a course I decided to see if she was right and it actually worked out that she did me a favour and I absolutely love what I do now!

What makes you different from other people selling/ doing the same craft?

I use all kinds of different materials and I also like to upcycle, therefore I will use anything from an old pair of jeans or a curtain! I like to think of it as giving an item a new identity and new purpose.

Where do you get your inspiration/ ideas from?

I read a lot of fashion magazines, all in the name of research of course! However, I also love history books particularly social history and have a great love of vintage handbags. My inspiration also comes from art in particular I love modern pop art.

Do you do this as your business full time or is it just a sideline?

This is my full time business and I have worked extremely hard, lets just say it has been a very steep learning curve!

Where do you make your items, do you have a craft room/ studio?

I currently have a half a dining table, however, I have been hinting very heavily for my own studio in the garden which is my dream.

Where do you sell and how do you market yourself?

I currently sell online and via a couple of stockists. Online marketing takes up an enormous amount of time as I use every free online marketing tool that I can in the form of Flickr, Facebook, Twitter, Blogging, Craft Juice and the list goes on.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?

Hopefully working from my studio in the garden! Ideally I would like to be selling my pieces primarily through stockists.

Do you have any advice for people out there who might want to start a craft hobby/business?

I would say do it! Nobody in my husband's or my family has ever had their own business so needless to say it was a little daunting. However, there is plenty of help and information out there and I always believe that life is too short to have a job you hate. One thing I would say is do not underestimate the amount of time you have to spend promoting. I see so many people asking on forums why they are not getting any sales and it turns out they opened their shop and expect people to just find them. You have to imagine that you are one person in a very large stadium and to get noticed you have to shout very loudly!

This week's random question - if you could invite 3 famous people round to dinner (dead or alive) who would you choose and why?

Coco Chanel - Amazing woman and an inspiration both as a person and a designer. A true testament to what a woman with very little resources and talent can achieve.
Rosa Parkes - A true heroine and someone who I use as an example to my girls of someone ordinary who instead of accepting a very bad situation said No and helped to change history.
Peter Kay - as he is hysterical and I imagine he would have us all in stitches!
Wow that would be a random dinner party!!

Feature Friday - Booties by Dannie

Happy Friday everyone and this week I have the pleasure of introducing Danielle Mansell from Booties by Dannie.

Describe what you do,when you started doing it and what made you decide that was what you were going to do.

I crochet baby booties & hats as well as collectable movie and tv characters, such as Star Wars and the Angry Birds. I started out just making a pair of baby booites for my son who was probably 9ish months and after many mums asked me to make them some I started taking things more seriously.

What makes you different from other people selling/ doing the same craft?

I think that the style of my baby booties sets me apart for the "norm". I make retro trainers, Uggs, Doc Martens as well as other well known styles. I also crochet what I love and what I would love to put on my own child.

The crochet dolls that I make, I haven't really seen anywhere else. Some of the patterns I use, with the permission of the designers and others, like Harry Potter, I have designed myself.

Where do you get your inspiration/ ideas from?

With the baby booties, I make what I find fun. I also try to watch trends so that I can imitate what adults are wearing to help stay on trend. The same goes with my crocheted dolls, I keep note of up and coming trends and try to be ahead of them.

Do you do this as your business full time or is it just a sideline. If you don't do this as a job would you like to?

I am self employed and look at this as my full time job outside of caring for my son, who is 2. My work hours revolve around him and housework. I can often be found at 1am crocheting and enjoying the silence.

Where do you make your items, do you have a craft room/ studio?

I generally work on my sofa. All my yarns are sorted into plastic tubs that are easy for me to transport when necessary.

Where do you sell and how do you market yourself?

Well I sell wherever I can without trying to spread myself too thin. I have my own website, http://bootiesbydannie.com. I also sell on Folksy and Etsy. I am also looking for established craft fairs to sell at.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?

I hope that this will be a proper full time job that I have honed to a well oiled machine. I hope to have established enough connections that I will no longer have to promote so hard and have people come to me.

Do you have any advice for people out there who might want to start a craft hobby/business?

Do what you love, stick with it and don't be led astray. If you really want things to work, and you want to be the least bit profitable, then listen to feedback good or bad. Oh and promote, promote, promote!!!

And finally one last random question - if you could take one thing to a desert island what would it be and why?

Hmmmmmmm how about a flock of sheep. That way I would have a never ending yarn supply!

I've been very busy making lots of cards this last week because in June I do my one and only craft fair for the year, Saddleworth Show. This is a great event and I always sell well hence building up my stock!!

Feature Friday - LaurasJewellery

For this week's feature I'd like to introduce Laura from LaurasJewellery. Laura makes wonderful pieces of jewellery that are a delightful mixture of cute, kitsch, unique, funky and sometimes slightly vintage.

When did you start making jewellery and what made you decide that was the craft you were going to do?

I was 18 when I made my first pair of earrings (7 years ago). They were a pair of blue fender plectrum earrings and I'd seen some on eBay and decided I could make them. It's spiralled ever since. I guess I fell into making jewellery, rather than deciding it was the craft for me.

Do you make anything else besides jewellery?

Yes, I dabble in other things too - baking, sewing, knitting and a bit of card making. I want to try making glass pendants and silver art clay pendants and learn how to crochet too!

Do you make a particular style of jewellery and what makes your pieces different to other jewellery makers?

I'd say my style is vintage, eclectic and kitsch all rolled in to one. I try to source unique things from lots of places to make my jewellery stand out. I love rummaging around car boots and charity shops!

Where do you get your inspiration from?

I get inspiration from lots of places; my favourite things at the moment are Alice In Wonderland, tea parties and Paris. I love butterflies and birds too!

Do you make jewellery full time or do you have a job as well, if so would you like to make a living out of jewellery?

I work full time, as a Marketing Executive. I'd love to be able to do my jewellery full time, but it’s a very competitive market and I'm not ready to take the risk at the moment.

Where do you make your jewellery?

I'd love my own studio, but at the moment I'm stationed in the spare bedroom with a small computer desk in the corner and jewellery making supplies and packing materials spread out around me.

Where do you sell your pieces and how do you market yourself?

My main outlet is Folksy (www.folksy.com/shops/LaurasJewellery) and I do some craft shows around the Christmas period. I have a Twitter account (http://www.twitter.com/LaurasJewellery) and a Facebook fan page (http://www.facebook.com/LaurasJewelleryShop ) for my jewellery and I'm in and out of a few forums as well.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?

I'd love to be self employed, with my own little shop, selling handmade things from around the country!

Do you have any advice for people out there who might be interested in making jewellery?

Do lots of research and make sure there aren’t too many artists out there doing similar work to yours. And, most importantly, don't undervalue your work - you'll never make a living otherwise!

Meet Hobbes

Thought I'd dedicate my next post to my baby... my 11 year old cat Hobbes. This photo was taken when I first started maing cards some 4 years ago. I wasn't working at the time and Hobbes used to come and sit on my desk to keep me company. As you can see crafting bores him!!

Not feeling well at present so yesterday I went off to the craft shop with ideas in my head of what I was going to create. By the time I got home and sat down (after I'd tidied my desk) my inspiration had disappeared!!

Feature Friday - Can U Knit it

Welcome to my 2nd Feature Friday. This week I would like to introduce Karen Nelson from Can U Knit It. Karen makes individual knitted and crocheted items using everything from luxury yarns to string.

When did you start making your items and what made you decide that was the craft you were going to do?

I started knitting when I was 10 years old but started selling on Folksy in September last year. I just enjoy knitting all the time, it's easy, quick and you can make all different things with it.

Do you do any other crafts?

Yes I sew, crochet, I have also done decoupage and I enjoy renovating old furniture by painting and stencilling it.

Is your craft your living or do you have a job as well, if you have a job would you like to make a living out of your craft?

I work full time as a pensions advisor but I would love to do a crafty job instead if I could.

Where do you get your inspiration from?
Everywhere, the garden, books, weather, fashion and fabrics.

Where do you sell your items and how do you market yourself?

I only sell on Folksy at the moment but when I have some spare time I would like to try some craft fairs. I market myself via Facebook, Twitter, Stumbleupon and hope to set my own website up in the near future.

Whereabouts in your house do you make your items?

Mainly the living room, I have also finished items at work in my lunch hour.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?

If possible I would like to see my items sold by some of the high street shops. Being successful and making more people aware of how versatile knitting is.

Do you have any advice for people out there who might be interested in knitting?

Just try it, there is loads of advice on the internet and books on how to get started and if it doesn't work out you can always undo it and start again.

Feature Friday - The Antoinette Collection

For my first ever Feature Friday I've chosen Kerri Roberts from The Antoinette Collection. Kerri designs unique jewellery, specialising in the use of genuine Swarovski crystal beads.

When did you start making jewellery and what made you decide that was the craft you were going to do?

I started making jewellery soon after being diagnosed with thyroid cancer in November 2009. It was around this time that I had a lot of time spent at my parents house as I was "on the bench" with work, meaning that you're employed but there is no projects for you to go out on. I decided instead of sitting in bed all day feeling sorry for myself I would pop down to Hobby Craft and find myself something to fill my time and get me off the laptop. After walking up and down the aisles I picked up a leaflet on jewellery making and bought myself some tools. I made a few items, mostly earrings and gave them to my Mum or wore them. In June 2010, I was made redundant from my then full-time job and quickly found another which meant moving to London. I had a break from jewellery making, but in October 2010 I was given the all-clear by the hospital so decided to get back into my hobby again to once again get me off the machine in the evenings and also away from the pubs. I started buying Swarovksi crystal beads and also bought a book on how to make more intricate designs. In Christmas 2010 my manager of my new job commissioned me to make his wife some jewellery for a present, I brought in my crystal design book and he chose the most intricate bracelet I have ever made. It took me about 5 attempts to get it right, but I was so pleased with what I'd made that I decided I should start looking into ways to sell more like it.

Do you make anything else besides jewellery?

I also decorate boxes using polymer clay, as well as creating polymer clay beads. However, I tend to use the beads myself and give the boxes to friends and relatives as gifts. I've recently started making ACEO's using pencil and marker pen, but this is still something I'm improving on.

Do you make a particular style of jewellery and what makes your pieces different to other jewellery makers?

My style of jewellery is mostly beadwoven items, although to be able to fill my shop I also make more delicate single stranded pieces that I try to list in between making the more intricate beadwoven items. My intricate items take me anywhere from 2 hours to a few days to create. I always use aorora borealis Swarovski crystals if possible and source my beads from a local supplier in Kentish town.

I think my items are different because I try to keep my costs as low as possible and they're mostly delicate items. The majority of beadwoven items I've seen on Folksy have been "charm" style, which are more clunky.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

My inspiration for my pieces firstly started from looking in books for designs, but now it's from doing market research and finding what colours are in season as well as what is currently selling on the high street. My theory is that if it's selling on the high street, then my item will always be a better option as noone else will have the same.

Would you like to make a living out of jewellery?

Jewellery making is my hobby first and foremost. During the day I'm sat in front of a computer as an IT consultant working on databases, so when I get home I want to be able to unwind and I find my hobby to be the best way to do so. I think if I were to make it into a way of making a living I wouldn't enjoy it so much. I like to take pride and care in the items that I make, so producing enough to fund my way of life might well lose some aspects of that.

Where do you make your jewellery?

Most of the time sat on my bedroom floor. I rent a room in a house in North London, it's about 20ft square with a huge dining table (we don't have a lounge), so all my work is done in my bedroom. Sometimes if I'm really getting into my designs I'll put the radio on freeview and sit there beadweaving for hours in the evening. I have told myself off so many times for going to bed stupidly late because I've been wanting to upload my items onto Folksy.

Where do you sell your pieces and how do you market yourself?

I sell my items on my Folksy page www.antoinettecollection.folksy.com but I also have an account on Etsy. I've sold items to friends and family, also to colleagues that have commissioned me work but it's all still early days. I market myself via twitter, forums, craftjuice, my blog (www.theantoinettecollection.wordpress.com), and my facebook page (www.facebook.com/antoinettecollection). The promotion of my work is something I'm still trying to get my head around. I've started blogging a featured seller each monday, a weekly listing update on wednesdays and I try to include a useful tips blog once a week to help fellow crafters to market their work. I also believe in helping other crafters promote themselves, so every Friday I try to list a "folksy friday" blog whereby I choose 6 items under a theme and list them in a featured post.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?

In 5 years time I'm hoping to have an established group of followers and a small customer base. I want to remain making bespoke items at affordable prices, but it would be lovely if my sales figures were steady. I give 10% of the cost price to Poole Hospital and have a JustGiving page setup to keep track of my charity giving. If I could make over £1000 in 5 years time for that charity, I would be extremely happy. It's just a small way of showing my gratitude for them treating me for my cancer and their on-going aftercare.

Do you have any advice for people out there who might be interested in making jewellery?

The market is saturated but if you can find a different angle to come at it for selling them all the better. Don't lose sight of the fact that it is a hobby and hobbies should be fun. So many sellers get down on the fact they aren't making many sales but the handcrafted market is only becoming mainstream. Buy a decent pair of pliers and some 6lb fireline with interesting beads and you'll be having fun. The best thing about making jewellery is you get to wear it, and if people like it they will always tell you. The feeling of someone else appreciating your hard graft is the best you will get from this hobby.

Missing in Action

It's been a while since my last blog post. No particular reason just been very busy at work and it's been too hot to spend any length of time on the computer -I know, I know - that's no excuse! Anyway since my last update there's been selling at Saddleworth Show, a work's night out and a nice walk.
Saddleworth Show was an amazing event once again. We did this last year, and the sun shone and there was record attendance. When we got the booking form at the end of last year we immediately booked our stalls for this year. The weather forecast wasn't great but the sun shone for us in the morning and then there was torrential rain in the afternoon which meant the event ended an hour early. Takings were still good considering the bad weather, not as good as last year but still worth going. I would recommend this event to any craft sellers out there. I went on a work's night out in Manchester's Northern Quarter the other week which was a great success. Free bar and free food - result! There was a great turn out, no surprise, and everyone had fun - some more than others! I got home around 4am which is very late for me (usually in bed at 10pm!) It took me all of the next day to recover - and I swore, as I always do, to never drink again! I lasted until the following day!!

Walking has been somewhat minimal due to the weather being so hot. Last weekend we drove over to Ashford-in-the-Water which is a beautiful little village just outside Bakewell. The walk took us up to Monsal Head, which is a famous beauty spot with a magnificent view down Monsal Dale and up the Wye valley, then across the viaduct over the river. It was about 5.5 miles and took around 3.5 hours. The weather was perfect for walking but sadly we made it back to the village just after the pub had closed!

So there we are - not much has happened really! July appears to be a busier month socially as we celebrate out 2nd Wedding Anniversary and we have friends visiting from the South....watch this space!

A Bank Holiday Stroll

Approx 7 miles to be more specific! We live on the outskirts of Saddleworth and Dovestones Reservoir is a popular haunt for lots of local people on a weekend. The walk around the 2 reservoirs is lovely and quite challenging in itself, but we decided to go one step further!! The walk took us up the steep path to Chew Reservoir, very hard going but eventually we made it to the top to see a very empty looking reservoir! We then walked a fair way along the edge of Saddleworth moorland with spectacular views of Dovestones and Yeoman Hey Reservoirs below. We passed brave rock climbers along the way... rather them than me! Eventually we started to descend down towards Dovestones again. 4 hours later and we arrive back at the car, very hot, tired but feeling a huge sense of achievement to look up and see where we'd been. A recommended circuit for any keen walkers out there.

The Sun Has Got His Hat On

Wow how hot is it this weekend!! Yesterday was spent doing the housework and the food shopping in the morning then a leisurely afternoon sat in the garden. We made the mistake of polishing off a whole bottle of Pims, which seemed like a good idea at the time. One jug just wasn't enough so we made a second. It was hard work getting to the end of it.... I can still taste it now!

Today will be mostly spent in the garden and packing. Tomorrow we head down to Somerset for a few days. We are staying in Doniford Bay just outside Watchet. Exmoor is a wonderful part of Britain and is where I've taken a few trips when I lived in the South West. It'll be lovely to return to that part of the country. We haven't been back that way since we moved north 3 years ago, a decision which was made due to circumstance rather than choice. I think we'd both love to move back down there.... maybe one day!

Anyway as I type I can feel this room getting hotter and hotter and a cold shower is called for. Sure there will be many photographs added to my blog on my return.

5 Whole Years

I met my husband 5 years ago today and thought it would be nice to write how I remember that day.

I remember it like it was only yesterday. It was a blind date (through Dating Direct) and we met up in a pub in Bristol at 1pm. I was a bit early and was waiting outside for him but really wasn't sure who I was looking out for - had only seen a photograph. I'd been waiting about 10 mins, getting a bit worried that I'd been stood up, then he rang saying he was just parking the car... about 5 mins later he turned up, looking very sweaty from running and quite nervous. My initial thoughts were phwoar... he's a bit of alright!! Anyway in we went and as we were both driving we drank copious amounts of coke. We talked and talked and seemed to have loads in common. After a couple of hours we decided to have something to eat... and we both had scampi and chips! After eating we decided it would be better for one of us to ditch a car...I ditched my car and then we went to another pub close to my house - it was nice that I could finally have a drink (large red wine!), certainly helped me loosen up a bit. The evening ended and he dropped me off home at midnight.... we laugh about our 11 hour first date because prior to that we'd both had disastrous blind dates, some that only lasted 20 mins!! We had a fantastic date and I hope when we're in our 70's we'll still remember it like it was yesterday! And yes we kissed on the first date... and it was me who made the move!!

Thought I'd share with you my latest Superhero cards... yes that's right I've been back to the craft shop to buy more supplies. I love these cards although cutting around their crotch is not easy!!

Flippin Stamping

I've been doing a lot of rubber stamping lately and as Father's Day's not too far away I'm loving the "Flippin" range of stamps... they are really detailed and look great when coloured in. My colouring in leaves a lot to be desired, been a few years since I last did any, but getting better and enjoying it! Here are a couple of cards I've made recently - let me know what you think.

Capesthorne Hall

We've been to Capesthorne Hall today, mainly to check out the Craft & Gift Fair but also because the hall and grounds are fabulous. Got there quite early so had a quick mooch around the fair, had a chat with Wendy from 1st Unique Gifts then we had a wander around the gardens. Weather not too bad, bit cold and windy but rain held back until we got back to the beer tent - perfect timing!! Had a Pims Cocktail in the tent then back into the fair to buy a couple of bits.... a lovely plaque from Wendy and a lovely card from Sally Ann Lambert. I've started to enjoy our days out since recently taking up photography. I was getting fed up with standing around waiting for my hubby to take the perfect picture - decided I might has well have a go too. I only have a point and snap camera but it's not bad. Here are a few photos....

Who's Your Favourite Superhero??

Everyone has their favourite Superhero right?? Mine is Wonder Woman - always loved watching her as a child, admiring her fabulous outfit and her hair... wow!!

Whilst in the craft shop yesterday I found the most wonderful decoupage sheets so I bought them and been busy this afternoon creating these:-

The Batman card is my favourite but would love to know what you think!! They are blank inside so perfect for Father's Day or a Birthday. These can be purchased in my Folksy Shop and it's FREE POSTAGE until Father's Day!!!

My Craft Room

Thought it would be nice to show you where I do my creating.... one of our loft rooms is a shared office - my side is as per the pics and hubby has a desk and a computer on the opposite wall which isn't very tidy today and he would kill me for showing you pics of his desk when it's a mess - it's usually pristene!!

Anyway as you can see I have most of the space and managed to get the best side of the room. It's lovely when the sun shines through the window - bit dull today though. It does get very warm up here though so most of the time the window's wide open!! There is always music playing and when my choice is on, hubby has his headphones on!! Madonna is on as I type.... and hubby not here so it's on really loud!!

I try to keep it tidy but when I'm creating theres stuff everywhere and every drawer and cupboard is open - only been packaging today so not too bad.

Day Off So Far

Well I was wide awake at 7.15am when hubby left for work, so he made me a lovely cup of tea.. bless him. I stayed in bed for a bit reading The Lovely Bones, which I'm loving so far! Hairdressers at 10am - I love having my hair done and it was well overdue - black (and some grey) roots are not a good look!! Out of the hairdressers by 12noon then into Tesco to pick up tonight's dinner, our favourite Old El Paso Fajitas and 2 bottles of wine - yum! Then took my car to a garage to get a quote to fix all the bumps and bruises.... ouch!! Craft shop next and boughts lots and lots of fab things - I sometimes don't find the right bits to buy but this time look at what I bought!!! I will have so much fun with this lot - I see lots of Father's Day Cards!!

Back home and on with the chores, so far bed changed, washing up done, bed linen in washing machine, bins emptied and now I'm blogging!! It's not quite the relaxing day off I had planned and don't know where the time's gone but hey I'm happy!!

A Long Weekend

I'm taking a well deserved day off from work tomorrow to give me a 4 day weekend - yay!! I've had a very busy and stressful week at work, which wasn't helped by someone reversing into the side of my car yesterday in Asda! The only plans I have so far are to get my hair cut and coloured at 10am tomorrow, then take my car to the spay garage to get a quote to fix all the bumps and bruises on it. The rest of the weekend will be ad-lib! I prefer to be spontaeous!! I hope to get lots of crafting done over the weekend as the weather forecast isn't great.... my crafting has suffered due to the beautiful sunshine...I'm an outdoors, sun-worshipping kinda gal!

At Last a Sale on Folksy!!

Following my fast forward into the 21st century move this weekend I went in search of old mobile phones and found 4 old phones - which considering they weren't that old were considerably different to what I've got now! I've kept 1 of them (the least valuable) just in case the new phone goes wrong, or gets thrown across the room in a temper...which is quite likely! I did a comparison to find out who would give me the most money for my old rope, which turned out to be these guys. Phones were packaged up and posted off today.... will await the arrival of a cheque for just over £100... woohoo!!!

Do your bit for the environment and make a bit of cash while you're at it..

Today I was able to upgrade my mobile phone contract. Rather than do it online we visited the O2 shop - with the hope that they could solve a dilemma. You see I was absolutely, totally, 100% decided I was getting an iPhone, then hubby came home and told me about the new Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 - and this threw me. I did loads of research and it looked great but I just couldn't decide whether to jump onto the iPhone bandwagon or be original and get something completely different. The manager in the shop couldn't really help, he knew loads about the iPhone but nothing about this one... so it was left up to me, and I was in the shop secretly doing an eeny, meeny, miny mo..... and guess which one I walked out of the shop with???

It's Hotting Up

It's really scarey how quick the year is flying by. Doesn't seem long since we had all that snow and look it's April already and the weather is lovely! Just spent the weekend getting the garden tidied and planted up ready for the dry, hot summer that we're gonna get... well I can hope! I love it when the sun is shining and I can spend time outside enjoying my garden. I only have a small garden but I have grass, trees and borders, even have room for patio furniture and my cat loves it when he can sprawl out on the grass!!

I really hope to get more use out of my barbeque this year.... already noticed there was a lack of barbeque food in the supermarkets this weekend!!

My crafting takes a hit when it's nice weather - can't be indoors when the suns out!! Good job I built up my stock over the winter!!

There seems to be an ongoing debate in the craft world at present... which online retail outlet is the best for selling your wares??

I personally have both a Misi shop and a Folksy shop - neither of which are making me much dosh! Etsy seems to be popular but am I right in thinking this is USA based?? I'd have to charge more for postage than I would for the card, hmmm??!!. If anyone would like to share success stories with their online shops I'm sure we'd all love to hear them....

Having just launched my website I am seriously thinking whether to sell direct from there rather than relying on other online retailers. If I can direct enough traffic to my website then maybe I will be able to migrate.

Craft For Life

I'm doing my bit for Cancer Research UK.

All you have to do is craft an A6 card, any theme, using products of your choice and leave the inside blank. Then pop down to your local Cancer Research shop and pick up a few of their special cello bags. Pop in your finished card then either sell to friends and family for £1 or give back to the shops to re-sell. Every little helps!! Why not join in....

I've done 3 cards already and working on another 3 - then they'll be taken back to the shop for them to re-sell for £1 each. I may even pick up some more cello bags and make more!

My next door neighbour buys a lot of cards off me and usually she wants cards that are personalised. She posted a note through the door the other day asking me to do her a card for a new baby boy that was born over the weekend... and here is it!

Wonder what her next request will be, she apparently has lots of new babies in the pipeline!
